Porcelain-fused-to-metal crown
A porcelain-fused-to-metal crown is a design proven over many years: the metal framework underneath provides strength, and the porcelain on top provides the look. It isn't ideal for a wide smile (a thin metal line may show near the gums), but for back teeth or as a budget-friendly option it is reliable, functional and affordable.
About the treatment
A porcelain-fused-to-metal crown is a fixed restoration with a metal framework covered by a layer of porcelain. The metal provides strength and withstands chewing forces for years, while the porcelain gives a natural look matched to the color of the neighboring teeth. It is a technology proven over decades and is still the most common choice for back teeth and dental bridges.
A porcelain-fused-to-metal crown is a good fit if: the tooth is badly damaged and a filling can no longer solve the problem, you need a bridge of 3 or more units, or your budget is limited and you need a reliable solution at a reasonable price.
Benefits of a porcelain-fused-to-metal crown at Dent Aura
Porcelain-fused-to-metal is the most affordable fixed restoration, with a real service life of 10–15 years.
In some clinical situations, a metal framework handles chewing forces better than zirconia.
We don't cut corners on the lab: the quality of the porcelain directly affects how the crown looks and how long it lasts.
You won't walk around with a prepared tooth: we place a temporary crown for the entire fabrication time (1–2 weeks).
How the procedure works
The doctor assesses the tooth and takes an X-ray to check the root and surrounding bone and to decide whether the tooth is worth saving under a crown.
If root canal treatment or a core build-up is needed, it is done first. We never rush to place a crown on a tooth that isn't ready.
The doctor reduces the tooth by 1.5–2 mm on all surfaces to make room for the crown. The procedure is completely painless.
A silicone impression is sent to the lab so the crown can be made precisely.
For the entire fabrication time (7–14 days), we place a temporary plastic crown so you look neat.
We check the fit, the shade and the bite. If needed, the lab makes adjustments.
We cement the crown with permanent cement. It is fixed in place for good.

Frequently asked questions
With proper care and a normal bite, 10–15 years or more. The metal framework doesn't deform, and the porcelain keeps its color for years.
A well-made porcelain-fused-to-metal crown looks natural on back teeth. The only downside is that after a few years a dark line from the metal framework may appear near the gums. That's why we recommend zirconia or E-max for front teeth.
Not always. If the tooth is vital, shows no signs of inflammation and has enough hard tissue for preparation, we keep the nerve. The decision is made individually after an examination.
Yes. We remove the old crown, assess the tooth and make a new one from a better material. This is a standard replacement procedure.
