How to take care of your teeth: advice from Dent Aura dentists

Toothbrush, paste, floss and water flosser: what you really need every day, how often to see a dentist and which habits harm enamel.

Зубна щітка, паста й нитка — щоденний догляд за зубами

Healthy teeth and gums affect the whole body. Poor oral hygiene leads not only to cavities and gum inflammation but also to periodontitis and bad breath, and inflammation in the mouth has been linked to stomach and heart conditions. The good news: most problems can be prevented with simple daily habits. Here’s how to take care of your teeth every day.

Brush properly and regularly

Brushing is the foundation of oral hygiene. It matters not only that you brush every day, but how you do it.

  • A soft or medium brush. Hard bristles can damage enamel and gums.
  • Twice a day — in the morning and before bed, so bacteria don’t get time to multiply.
  • Technique: short vertical and circular strokes from the gum to the edge of the tooth, without pressing hard.
  • 2–3 minutes — that’s how long it takes to clean every surface.
  • Clean your tongue too: bacteria that cause bad breath build up there.

Floss, mouthwash and a water flosser

Even the best toothbrush can’t reach between the teeth — and that’s where cavities most often start.

  • Dental floss removes plaque and food between the teeth. Once a day, in the evening, is enough.
  • Mouthwash reduces bacteria and freshens breath but doesn’t replace brushing and flossing.
  • A water flosser helps if you have braces, crowns or implants — the water jet rinses out food where it’s hard to reach.

Food for healthy enamel

Some foods strengthen teeth, others slowly wear down enamel.

  • Good: dairy (calcium), fish (phosphorus), crunchy vegetables and fruit — they stimulate saliva, which neutralises acid.
  • Bad: frequent sugary snacks, fizzy drinks, acidic foods. What matters is not how much sugar but how often: every snack is a new 20–30-minute “acid attack”.
  • Water rinses away food. After coffee, tea or sweets, just rinse your mouth.

See your dentist regularly

Even if nothing hurts, check-ups are essential.

  • A check-up every 6 months catches cavities while they’re small and quick and inexpensive to treat.
  • A professional cleaning removes tartar that a toothbrush can’t — the main cause of gum inflammation.
  • Don’t put off a visit if you notice pain, bleeding gums or sensitivity to cold.

Avoid harmful habits

  • Don’t bite hard objects — pens, ice, nuts in their shells. This causes micro-cracks and chips.
  • Cut down on smoking: tobacco harms the gums and darkens enamel.
  • Drink coffee and tea in moderation — they stain enamel. A straw and a glass of water afterwards help.

In short

Brush twice a day, floss once a day, snack on sweets less often and see a dentist twice a year. For most people that’s enough to avoid serious treatment for years. If it’s been a while since your last cleaning, book a visit: the dentist will check your teeth and tell you what to focus on.

Questions and answers

How often should I replace my toothbrush?

Every 2–3 months, or sooner if the bristles are splayed. It's also a good idea to replace it after a cold.

Can a water flosser replace floss?

A water flosser rinses out food well but is less effective at removing firm plaque. It's best to combine them: floss daily, use the flosser as an extra.

How often do I need a professional cleaning?

For most people, every 6 months. Smokers, coffee lovers and people with braces — every 3–4 months.
